Volunteering whilst on welfare benefits

Sometimes there is confusion and misunderstanding around the guidelines and permission for volunteering  when in receipt of benefits. This confusion can be with both the claimant and the benefits advisor.

A person can volunteer whilst in receipt of welfare benefits, however, there are some rules based on the number of job search  hours required and how many volunteering hours can be counted towards this. For clear guidance visit the NVCO website

Information may differ for JSA and other benefits

As volunteer managers, the clear advice to volunteers is that they should discuss their volunteering with their benefits adviser. You might want to include this in any first discussions you have with a volunteer before they join your organisation, and then again at their induction.
